The Second Voyage (1772–1775)

In August 1771, shortly after my return, I was promoted to Commander. Then in 1772, the Admiralty decided to send me on another expedition, with the aim of either finding the continent of Terra Australis, or proving that it didn’t exist. On my first voyage, I’d sailed all around the islands of New Zealand, proving that they weren’t part of a continent. In addition, I’d charted the east coast of Australia, discovering that Australia was a huge area of land. But some scientists in the Royal Society were still convinced that the continent of Terra Australis was further south. So, I set off with two ships: HMS Resolution and HMS Adventure. I commanded HMS Resolution and HMS Adventure was commanded by Captain Furneaux.

On 17th January 1773, we became probably the first ships to cross the Antarctic Circle. But we ran into terrible weather, and our two ships became separated. Captain Furneaux went north to New Zealand, and I continued exploring the dangerous waters of the Antarctic. But I didn’t find a continent because I had to sail north to Tahiti to get fresh supplies of food and other things. I tried again to find Terra Australis, but I couldn’t. After returning to New Zealand in 1774, our ships set sail for home. We took a young man from Tahiti called Omai with us. We sailed around Cape Horn and across the South Atlantic, claiming several islands for Britain on the way. When I got home, I wrote a report, saying that Terra Australis definitely didn’t exist.
